Morocco: The Kingdom of Balances

Morocco is a country of tightrope walkers. Between tradition and modernity, between Islam and openness, between monarchy and democratic aspirations, between Africa and Europe. This kingdom of 37 million inhabitants has preserved its stability where its neighbours have collapsed. The Arab Spring produced only a constitutional reform, not a revolution. King Mohammed VI has reigned since 1999, modernising the country while keeping hold of the reins of power.

The Economy of Contrasts

Morocco boasts impeccable motorways, a high-speed train, Renault and PSA factories, and an airport hub in Casablanca. But the country remains deeply unequal: the prosperous coastline contrasts with the forgotten Atlas Mountains and Rif region. Youth graduate unemployment is endemic, fuelling illegal emigration to Europe. Tourism and phosphates sustain the economy, but dependence on rainfall remains strong.

The Ubuntu Strength: Hospitality and Diversity

Morocco is a crossroads of cultures — Arab, Amazigh, Andalusian, African, Jewish. This diversity is a treasure. Moroccan hospitality is legendary: mint tea, offered three times according to tradition, is a welcoming ritual. Family solidarity remains the bedrock of society. Football (the Atlas Lions reaching the 2022 World Cup semi-finals) united an entire people in pride.

He who has no money, his word is bland

— Proverb darija marocain

Morocco teaches us that stability has a price, but that progress is possible without revolution. Balance is an art — Morocco has practised it for centuries, between the desert and the sea, between the past and the future.
