Mauritius: The Rainbow of the Indian Ocean

Mauritius is a miracle of coexistence. On this island of 1.3 million inhabitants, Hindus (50%), Creoles (27%), Muslims (17%) and Sino-Mauritians (3%) have lived together for generations without civil war, without pogroms, without major tensions. Mauritian pluralism is not perfect — communities remain distinct — but it works. It is the African country with the highest Human Development Index.

The Economic Model

Mauritius successfully managed its economic transition: from sugar (a colonial legacy) to textiles, then to tourism, offshore finance and services. It has a diversified economy, a stable democracy (regular alternations of power), and the rule of law. But the model is running out of steam: textiles are declining in the face of Asian competition, tourism is vulnerable, and inequalities persist between communities.

The Ubuntu Strength: Pluralism and Creoleness

Mauritius invented a unique form of living together. Each community keeps its traditions — Hindu temples, mosques, Chinese pagodas, churches — while sharing séga (Creole music), rougaille (mixed cuisine), and Mauritian Creole (the common language). Religious holidays are public holidays for all. Intercommunal marriages are increasing. It is a functioning laboratory of pluralism.

Mauritius teaches us that diversity can be a strength, and that a small island can give lessons to great continents.
