Sierra Leone: Blood Diamonds and Reconciliation

Sierra Leone evokes blood diamonds, child soldiers, the film Blood Diamond. Between 1991 and 2002, a civil war of unparalleled brutality killed 50,000 and traumatised an entire country. The RUF rebels, financed by diamonds, cut off civilians' hands to terrorise the population. Twenty years later, Sierra Leone is slowly rebuilding, with a resilience that commands respect.

The Slow Reconstruction

After the war, Ebola (2014–2016) struck, killing 4,000 and paralysing the economy. Infrastructure remains deficient, poverty widespread. Diamonds — the source of the curse — are now better controlled through the Kimberley Process. The economy rests on iron, bauxite and fishing. The 2018 and 2023 elections were contested but did not degenerate.

The Ubuntu Strength: Forgiveness and Solidarity

How do you forgive the unforgivable? Sierra Leone attempted an answer with the Special Court (which tried Charles Taylor) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Perpetrators and victims met face to face, spoke, sometimes forgave. Community solidarity enabled the reintegration of former combatants. Palm wine music, football and Christian faith helped the healing.

Wherever I go, I know where I come from

— Proverb krio

Sierra Leone teaches us that reconciliation is possible — not easy, not complete, but possible. The severed hands will not grow back, but a country can learn to live with its ghosts.
