Niger: The Cure Salée Amid the Chaos

Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world — and one of the youngest, with a median age of 15 and a record fertility rate (7 children per woman). This landlocked country of 25 million inhabitants, wedged between the Sahara and the Sahel, faces a triple crisis: security (jihadism), political (the July 2023 coup), and humanitarian (chronic famine). Yet every year, the Cure Salée gathers nomads for a celebration of life in the heart of the desert.

The Coup and Its Aftermath

In July 2023, the presidential guard overthrew Mohamed Bazoum, the last democratically elected president in the region. General Tchiani seized power, broke with France and welcomed Wagner. ECOWAS sanctions strangled the economy. Uranium — the main resource — still interests the great powers. Jihadism continues to advance in the border areas.

The Ubuntu Strength: Joking Kinship and the Cure Salée

Niger survives through its solidarity networks. Joking kinship between Hausa and Zarma, between Fula and Tuareg, maintains a minimum of cohesion. The Cure Salée, the annual festival where Fula nomads gather near Ingall, is a concentrate of life: Gerewol dances where men beautify themselves to attract partners, camel races, trade exchanges. It is proof that joy can be born in deprivation.

Niger teaches us that youth is both a force and a challenge. 25 million young people waiting for a future — that is either a bomb or a promise. Niger has not yet decided.
