Botswana: The Diamond of African Democracy

Botswana is the exception that proves the rule — or rather, that destroys it. At independence in 1966, it was one of the poorest countries in the world, with no infrastructure and only 12 kilometres of paved roads. Today, it is one of the continent's most remarkable success stories: an uninterrupted democracy for 58 years, exemplary management of diamond revenues, and an emerging middle class.

The Miracle of Well-Managed Diamonds

In 1967, one year after independence, diamonds were discovered at Orapa. Other countries would have succumbed to the resource curse. Botswana did the opposite. Diamond revenues were invested in education, health and infrastructure. The partnership with De Beers (Debswana, 50-50) became a model. Today, Botswana has a per capita income comparable to that of some Eastern European countries. The healthcare system works, and education is free through secondary school.

The Ubuntu Strength: Tswana Values

Botswana has preserved its traditional institutions while building a modern state. The kgotla — the village assembly where everyone can speak — remains the bedrock of collective deliberation. Tswana values of respect (tlotlo), mutual aid (thusano) and consensus still structure social life. National cohesion is remarkable for a country with several ethnic groups.

A person is a person because of other people

— Proverb setswana

Botswana reminds us that the resource curse is not inevitable, that democracy can take root in Africa without Western guidance, and that the wisdom of elders can coexist with modernity. As a Tswana proverb says: the chief is chief through the people.
