Malawi: The Warm Heart of Africa

Malawi calls itself the Warm Heart of Africa — and it lives up to the name. This small country of 20 million inhabitants, stretched along Lake Malawi, is one of the poorest in the world but also one of the most welcoming. Malawian hospitality is not a tourist slogan — it is a reality experienced by anyone who travels through this land of green hills and peaceful villages.

Poverty and Resilience

Malawi has neither oil nor minerals, just tobacco (top exporter), tea and subsistence farming. The country relies heavily on international aid. But democracy has strengthened: in 2020, an election annulled for fraud was re-run and the opposition won — a first in Africa. Lake Malawi, the third largest in Africa, is an ecological marvel but cannot feed everyone.

The Ubuntu Strength: Hospitality and Community

Malawians have little but share that little with generosity. Villages run on mutual aid: collective house-building, communal farmwork. The Church (Presbyterian, Catholic) plays a major social role. Gospel music is omnipresent. Lake Malawi — with its hundreds of cichlid fish species — is both a natural and cultural treasure.

Your neighbour's child is also yours

— Proverb chichewa

Malawi teaches us that human warmth cannot be measured in dollars, and that hospitality can be a country's greatest wealth.
