Central African Republic: The Broken Heart of the Continent
The Central African Republic lies at the geographical heart of Africa — and it is a heart that bleeds. This country of 5 million inhabitants, the size of France, is one of the poorest and most unstable in the world. Since 2012, a civil war has pitted shifting coalitions of armed groups — Séléka, Anti-balaka, and others — against each other. Diamonds, gold and timber fuel the conflict. Wagner arrived in 2018.
The Collapsed State
The Central African Republic is the archetype of the failed state. The government controls only a fraction of the territory. Armed groups rule, exploit the mines and extort the population. MINUSCA peacekeepers try to maintain a semblance of order. Wagner — now Africa Corps — protects President Touadéra and extracts resources. The population survives in absolute destitution.
The Ubuntu Strength: Sango and Survival
Sango, the national language spoken by all, is the glue of a nation that could shatter. Central Africans, whether Christian or Muslim, share this language and culture. Family and village solidarity enables survival when everything collapses. The Aka Pygmies of the forest maintain their millennia-old traditions.
