Zambia: One Zambia, One Nation — The Country That Chose Peace

In a continent where colonial borders have often spawned civil wars and ethnic fractures, Zambia is a happy anomaly. This landlocked country of 20 million inhabitants, where 73 ethnic groups coexist, has never known civil war. The slogan forged by Kenneth Kaunda — One Zambia, One Nation — is not just a slogan: it is the founding narrative of a country that made peaceful coexistence its identity.

The Copper Paradox

Zambia sits on one of the world's largest copper reserves — the Copperbelt. For decades, copper accounted for over 70% of export revenues. The debt crisis — Zambia was the first African country to default on its sovereign debt during Covid in 2020 — exposed the structural fragility of a single-export economy. But the election of Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, in a peaceful transition admired across the continent, opened a new chapter.

The Ubuntu Strength: The Kuomboka, Kalindula and the Spirit of Kaunda

Zambia's secret is its social fabric. Kenneth Kaunda deliberately built a national identity above ethnic identities. By imposing English as the official language, posting civil servants outside their home regions, and promoting inter-ethnic marriages, Kaunda wove a sense of shared belonging. The Kuomboka ceremony — where the Lozi king crosses the flooded plains of the Zambezi — is one of the most spectacular in Africa.

Zambia teaches us that peace is a choice — not a geographic inevitability, but a collective decision, renewed with each generation. In a neighbourhood of wars, Zambia held. Not because it is rich, but because it chose to be one.
